Year 3 is an exciting year for the children when they move from KS1 to KS2. We try to make the transition as enjoyable as possible for the children.

Projects for 2016/17 are

  • Autumn term - Does food taste better in the dark?
  • Spring term - What was life like before the Roman invasion? What is the legacy of the Romans?

End of phase expectations

Reading - by the end of Y4 most children are expected to:

  • Apply their growing knowledge of prefixes, suffixes
  • Develop positive attitudes to reading
  • Listen to and discuss a wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books
  • Use dictionaries
  • Read poetry and plays aloud
  • Check text makes sense
  • Ask questions
  • Predict what might happen next
  • Discuss characters' feelings, thoughts and motives
  • Retrieve and record information from non-fiction

Writing - by the end of Y4 most children are expected to:

  • Plan, draft, edit and proof read writing
  • Use 'when, before, after, while, so, because, then, next, soon, because, during, in'
  • Write in paragraphs
  • Use inverted commas for direct speech
  • Use apostrophes correctly

Spelling and handwriting - by the end of Y4 most children are expected to:

  • Apply their growing knowledge of prefixes, suffixes
  • Spell correctly words that sound the same but have different meanings
  • Correct use of the possessive apostrophe in plurals e.g. girls', boys'
  • Use first two or three letters of a word to check spelling in a dictionary
  • Use strokes to join letters together
  • Use joined handwriting with increased fluency

Maths - by the end of Y4 most children are expected to:

  • Count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100
  • Find 10 or 100 more or less
  • Understand HTU
  • Compare and order numbers up to 1000
  • Read and write numbers up to 1000 in numerals and words
  • Solve number and practical problems, including missing numbers
  • Add and subtract numbers up to three digits
  • Use inverse to check answers
  • Know 2,3,4,5,8 and 10 multiplication tables
  • Count up and down in tenths
  • Recognise equivalent fractions
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator
  • Order fractions
  • Measure, compare, add and subtract - lengths (m/cm/mm), mass (kg/g), volume/capacity (l/m)
  • Add and subtract money using £ and p
  • Tell and write the time, including Roman numerals, 12hr and 24hr clocks
  • Draw 2d and 3d shapes
  • Recognise angles, and identify right angles, know that two right angles make a half-turn, three make a three quarter turn
